SUBJECT
Programming an Earlier DME Replacement with ISTA/P and Manual Entry
MODEL
All early E- Series models which use a flash programmable DME which include most variants of:
E36, E38, E39, E46, E52, E53, E83, E85, and E86.
SITUATION
When installing a replacement DME a specific procedure should be followed to ensure that it is programmed correctly.
This will require a manual entry in ISTA/P of both the basic and programmed part numbers.
If they are not known from the original part they can be obtained from EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog), but it is important that the VIN is entered in
order to set a defined search for the proper model variant.
While a programmed part is not available for ordering, the last seven digits of the part number is to be used during the programming session along
with the seven digit basic number on the DME label itself.
Note:
For a few variants in which the DME hardware changed at some point during model production, the original numbers will not be valid with the
newer replacement part. In these cases the numbers from EPC and the replacement DME label itself will be accepted by ISTA/P.
Important!
Before starting an ISTA/P session the new replacement DME should first be installed then answer "Yes" modules were replaced and select the
DME.
Depending on the DME variant ISTA/P will prompt for the basic hardware and
programmed part numbers, otherwise select DME from the control module tree and then the manual programming option.
These older DME variants only need to be programmed and do not support coding, therefore do not add entire vehicle coding to the measures plan.
If programming problems still arise, submit a PuMA case for assistance after first verifying that the correct part was ordered and include these
