SUBJECT:

E46, MRS 3 Satellite Sensors Replacement

MODEL:

E46 sedan, manufactured from 09/99 up to 11/99 with MRS 3

E46 coupe, manufactured up to 11/99 with MRS 3

Situation:

After replacement of a defective satellite sensor for a side airbag, the SRS light stays illuminated and fault code: "2D - Sensor for side airbag, front"

is stored in the MRS 3 control module.

Cause:

The newly installed satellite sensor (P/N 65 77 6 911 038) is not compatible with the original equipment (sensor P/N 65 77 6 906 174).

Since November of '99 production, all E46 vehicles are equipped with the new type of satellite sensors (Bosch 2) and subsequently only the new

parts (P/N 65 77 6 911 038) are available from the BMW PDC's for E46 vehicles equipped with MRS3 system.

Correction:

When replacing a faulty satellite sensor check the part number of the replaced sensor. In case the older style sensor (PN 65 77 6 906 174) was found,

install two new sensors (PN 65 77 6 911 038) on both sides of the vehicle.

237

NOTE:

If both satellite sensors are not of the same part number (65 77 6 911 038), the SRS light will illuminate immediately and the fault cannot be

cleared unless satellite sensors of the same part number are installed.

Check the part number of the defective sensor. If the number on the label is: 65 77 6 906 174 (as shown on the illustration), then both sensors (left

and right) have to be replaced.
