Rear Bumper Cover Loose



MODEL:

Situation:



On some E46s the rear bumper cover may not align properly with the body in the area of the rear wheel well, and tends to stick out from the body.

Cause:



Temperature changes may cause the bumper cover to distort slightly.



Correction:



In case of customer complaint, an additional retainer clip, part number 5112 4015 053 can be installed to hold the bumper cover in proper alignment.



Procedure:



Remove the rear wheel and wheel house liner for access.



Using a utility knife (2) carefully trim the plasticized undercoating (3) from the lip on the quarter panel in the area immediately in front of the tab (1)



on the bumper cover. Use care to ensure that the paint does not get damaged.



Hold the bumper cover up against the body and install retaining clip (1) to hold the cover in place. The hooked end of the clip goes on the bumper



cover.



Apply a bead of Sikaflex windshield adhesive (2) over the clip and on each side of it to help hold the clip in place and provide corrosion protection.



Parts Information:



This repair requires one or two retaining clips, part number 51 12 4 015 053.

Covered under the terms of the BMW new car limited warranty.
